Bridges and Canals Listed on Both Registers of Historic Sites


Antietam Street Bridge. Built: 1930. Antietam Street over the Dequindre Cut where the tracks of the Grand Trunk Western Railroad were formerly located near downtown Detroit.

Belle Isle Bridge. Built: 1923. This bridge extends East Jefferson on the mainland across a channel of the Detroit River to Belle Isle on Detroit’s east side.

Chestnut Street Bridge. Built 1929. This bridge carries Chestnut Street across the Dequindre Cut where the tracks of the Grand Trunk Western Railroad were formerly located near downtown Detroit.

Clinton-Kalamazoo Canal. Construction began 1838. This canal was designed to link Lake Saint Clair on Lake St. Clair on the east side of Michigan to Lake Michigan on the west side but only a few miles were constructed. The completed part of this canal ran through Rochester and Rochester Hills in Oakland County and through Shelby Township and Utica in Macomb County.

East River Road Bridge. Built 1945. This bridge bears East River Road across the Hickory Canal on Grosse Ile.

Fort Street-Pleasant Street Bridge: Built 1928. This bridge carries South Fort Street over what are now the Norfolk Southern Railroad tracks in southwest Detroit. Formerly these were the tracks of the New York Central and Wabash Railroads.

Ferry Street-Thoroughfare Canal Bridge. Built: 1947. This bridge carries Ferry Road across the Thorofare Canal in central Grosse Ile. On some maps, Ferry Street is listed as Ferry Road.

Gibraltar Road Bridge. Built: 1932. This bridge carries Middle Gibraltar Road across the Waterway Canal in Gibraltar.

Harbin Drive – Silver Creek Channel Bridge. Built: 1930. This bridge takes Harbin Drive across the Silver Creek Channel and is very close to the Jefferson Avenue – Huron River Bridge in Brownstown Township.

Jefferson Avenue-Huron River Bridge. Built: 1930. This structure carries West Jefferson Avenue across the lower Huron River in Brownstown Township.

Lilley Road – Lower Rouge River Bridge. Built: 1923. This bridge carries Lilley Road across the Lower Rouge River in Canton Township.

Parke Lane Road-Thoroughfare Canal Bridge. Built 1929. This bridge carries Parke Lane over the Thoroughfare Canal at the northwest corner of Grosse Ile.

South Pointe Drive – Swan Island Canal Bridge. Built: 1929. This bridge carries South Pointe Road across Swan Island Canal at the southwest corner of Grosse Ile. This bridge may be listed as the South Pointe Drive – Frenchman’s Creek Bridge in some places. Swan Island Canal, I believe, is a small waterway that links Frenchman’s Creek to the Detroit River.

Waltz Road Bridge. Built: 1924. This bridge carries Waltz Road over the lower Huron River in New Buffalo. .

West Jefferson Avenue Bridge. Built: 1922. This bridge carries West Jefferson over the Rouge River in southwest Detroit.

Bridges and Tunnels Listed on the Federal Register of Historic Sites but, apparently,
not listed on the Michigan Register of Historic Sites.

Ambassador Bridge. Opened in 1929. This bridge across the Detroit River connects the United States with Canada. It extends from, approximately, the intersection of West Vernor Highway and the Jefferies Freeway in southwest Detroit to, approximately, the intersection of College Avenue and Huron Church Road in Windsor.

Derby Road Bridge. Built: 1930. This bridge carries Derby Road across the tracks of the Grand Trunk Western Railroad in Birmingham.

Detroit and Windsor Vehicular Tunnel. Opened: 1930. This tunnel is the only vehicular subaqueous border crossing in the world. It extends, approximately, from the foot of Randolph Street in Detroit to, approximately, the intersection of Freedom Way and Park Street West in Windsor.

Detroit River Railroad Tunnel. Opened: 1910. This tunnel, built by the Michigan Central Railroad and the Canada Southern Railway allows trains to travel to cross the international border underneath the Detroit River.

Gillepsie Street–Clinton River Bridge. Built: 1936. This small bridge takes Gillepsie Street over the Clinton River in Pontiac.

Michigan Central Railroad–Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad Bridge. I do not know when this bridge was constructed nor where it is located but it was added to the National Register in 1980 and is located in Dearborn.

Trowbridge Road-Grand Trunk Western Bridge. Built: 1930. This bridge carries Trowbridge Road over the Grand Trunk Western Railroad tracks in Bloomfield Hills.

U. S. 12/Michigan Avenue–I-94 Bridge. Built 1948. This bridge carries Michigan Avenue across what is now I-94 but was the Edsel Ford Freeway when the bridge was constructed. The bridge is located in Dearborn very close to the Detroit border.
